Hydrogen filling stations are coming soon – we help green hydrogen break through in Finland

In all likelihood, hydrogen filling stations will become more common, and Sarlin is ready to provide solutions in cooperation with Resato Hydrogen Technology.

While relatively rare in Finland today, the future may see more vehicles powered by green hydrogen. Sizable hydrogen projects are under consideration, and the ever-stricter emission targets of the European Union steer Finnish companies towards clean hydrogen. Finland has also set the ambitious goal of being one of the leaders of Europe’s hydrogen economy.

Read on to learn about the future of the hydrogen economy and the hydrogen filling solutions we at Sarlin can provide with our partner Resato.

The hydrogen energy economy is at the heart of the green transition

The future looks bright for green hydrogen as the EU emission targets and related sanctions steer businesses towards renewable energy solutions. Finland’s national objectives are to halve the greenhouse gas emissions of vehicles by 2023 compared to the level of 2005, achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, and move to completely fossil-free domestic transport by 2045.

  • Clean hydrogen production capacity is projected to grow substantially, based on the national climate and energy strategy. The strategy states that Finland must also support the creation of clean hydrogen production capacity. The targets are a minimum of 200 MW by 2025 and a minimum of 1,000 MW by 2030.
  • Finland is looking to become Europe’s leading clean hydrogen production technology expert in the future.

The hydrogen economy also helps with energy storage needs, as processed hydrogen is ready for storage and transport. Hydrogen can be refined into electrofuels (e-fuels) for a variety of applications.

Hydrogen produced with renewable energy is a potential key alternative fuel, which are needed to realise the green transition of transport.

More broadly speaking, the hydrogen economy is driven by the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which aims to cut traffic emissions by 55 per cent by 2030. AFIR involves the construction of alternative fuel distribution infrastructure and also requires Member States to enable hydrogen refuelling.

Green hydrogen is completely emission-free during use – the only side product is clean water.

Green hydrogen is an especially good fit for heavy goods vehicles, which are difficult to electrify

Benefits of hydrogen for road transport:

  • Emission-free
  • Quick and easy to refuel
  • Long range

Successful hydrogen refuelling projects need financial support and competent hands

While strong guidance exists in emission targets and legislation for the development of the hydrogen economy, the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure cannot be built overnight. In Finland, hydrogen filling stations were added to the Energy Authority transport infrastructure subsidy programme in 2022. The programme subsidises alternative solutions to fossil fuels.

Another factor required for hydrogen projects to succeed is competent actors with complementary project expertise. Here is where we and our partners come in.

Strong project expertise in cooperation with Resato

We wish to be at the forefront of advancing the green transition, which is why we are involved in the construction of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

Our Dutch partner and a world leader in hydrogen filling stations, Resato Hydrogen Technology B.V., has more than 30 years of experience in designing, producing and maintaining high-pressure systems. Our companies have signed a cooperation agreement.

Sarlin handles the maintenance and technical support of Resato hydrogen filling stations in close cooperation with Resato.

Key customer benefits of our cooperation with Resato:

  • High availability of hydrogen filling stations
  • Low response times and maintenance costs
  • Local service to our Finnish customers

Resato chose us as their partner because they value our technological expertise, nationwide maintenance service network, and long-term experience of Finnish industry.

Sarlin has more than 30 years of experience in environmentally friendly energy technology and safe gas processing.

Safety is a critical aspect because hydrogen gas is explosive and requires careful attention to process and monitor.
