Liedon Vesi – area gas monitoring with Blackline Safety G7 EXO

Liedon Vesi, the local utility for the municipality of Lieto in Finland, is the first in the world to adopt the Blackline Safety G7 EXO area gas monitoring system.

Liedon Vesi is responsible for producing high-quality domestic water as well as sewage treatment. The utility’s customer base includes some 6 700 water consumers. The water services team is responsible for about 450 kilometres of water mains and 360 kilometres of sewer pipes with 50 kilometres of pressurised sewer lines and 52 sewage pumping stations. Water is supplied from two water towers.

Hydrogen sulphide concentration monitoring

Hydrogen sulphide corrodes the inflow wells and pools of line pumping stations in long transfer sewer lines. In addition to eating away concrete, hydrogen sulphide has an unpleasant smell. Hydrogen sulphide is also lethal because it interferes with cellular respiration – that means maintenance personnel must wear personal gas detectors.

- We use the continuous measurements and reports of the EXO area monitoring system to detect hydrogen sulphide levels and their fluctuation in our long pressurised sewer lines. As the town grows, planners place residential areas closer to pumping stations, which must also be accounted for in our monitoring, says Water Services Manager Aki Teini.

Liedon Vesi aims to use the system to determine measures that would reduce the generation of hydrogen sulphide. This would also reduce the odour nuisance caused by the ventilation of line chambers and pumping stations.  Currently, the vent pipes of the largest pumping stations include active carbon filters

Blackline Safety G7 EXO area gas monitoring system

Liedon Vesi has purchased two gas detector systems that are compatible with their existing Blackline Safety G7c personal gas detectors.

The EXO detectors have enough battery capacity to run for 100 days and they have no signal range limit. This makes them suitable for monitoring remote locations. The EXO detector connects to the Blackline cloud service with its integrated 2G/3G/4G modem, and it also includes integrated GPS and location transmission technology.

Aki Teini praises the equipment as one of the market’s most advanced systems for measuring hydrogen sulphide in particular. The detector also measures oxygen, carbon monoxide and combustible gases. Teini further makes the point that the price level is consumer-friendly.
