LNG meets changing energy needs

Tyres for heavy goods vehicles and bicycles are manufactured in Lieksa in Finland using process steam produced with LNG. In addition to steam generation, LNG is used to heat the factory. The steam is produced by One1, an energy company, and the LNG is supplied by Rohe Solutions Oy. The technology for the Rohe Solutions plant was supplied by Sarlin.

LNG replaces heavy fuel oil

LNG, liquefied natural gas, is seeing more use outside the pipelines of the distribution network. For example, the Kerantie tyre factory in Lieksa in Finland has converted its heavy fuel oil-powered steam generation plant to LNG.

The conversion was completed in early summer in 2018. According to Managing Director Mika Kallio of One1 Oy, the conversion is based on a type of energy solution that meets changing energy needs locally with clean and cost-effective fuel. “We produce the steam and Rohe Solutions supplies the LNG. Sarlin technology is used to convert the LNG from liquid back to gas. Lieksa is the first industrial-scale client during our collaboration. An LNG terminal is nearing completion in Hamina, further improving the availability of LNG.”

In Lieksa, the process steam generated with LNG is used by Nokian Heavy Tyres Ltd, Suomen Rengastehdas Oy, and PK Kappi Oy. For example, the steam is used in tyre curing presses at different pressure levels. The steam generation and heating energy plant has a combined output of six megawatts.

Sarlin delivers vaporiser plant

Sarlin has years of experience in  vaporising LNG for transport fuel use. The vaporisers of LNG filling stations are typically vertical or horizontal models. In Lieksa, Sarlin delivered a mobile LNG container, where LNG is vaporised to turn it from a liquid back into a gas. The vaporisation uses condensing heat from the steam generation plant, recovered with a heat exchanger. The LNG is delivered to Lieksa in tanks. There are two tanks, and they are swapped when the first tank empties.

– Sarlin was responsible for the delivery and installation of the steam generation plant. One1 operates and maintains the Rohe Solutions steam generation plant according to Sarlin’s maintenance instructions and with their technical support. We’ve cooperated closely throughout the project. There are plans to deliver further plants, so our collaboration is set to continue, says Mika Kallio, Managing Director of One1 Ltd.

The technology delivered by Sarlin can also be used to vaporise liquefied biogas, LBG.
