Sarlin maintains Stora Enso’s compressed air equipment

Stora Enso operates in the global bioeconomy as a supplier of packaging, biomaterial, wood, and renewable paper industry products.

Sarlin currently maintains nearly all of Stora Enso’s compressed air equipment at the company’s packing board, paper, pulp, and sawmills throughout Finland. The partnership is based on continuous development: actively seeking new means together to improve life cycle management, energy efficiency and safety, among other things.

The collaboration of Stora Enso and Sarlin in compressed air started in the 1990s. The first unit-specific maintenance contracts were signed in the early 2000s. This has gradually led to the current situation where Sarlin maintains the compressed air equipment of nearly all Stora Enso packing board, paper, pulp, and sawmills.

- Stora Enso and Sarlin signed a nationwide compressed air equipment maintenance contract in 2016 after a careful tendering and selection process, says Jari Viholainen, Managing Director of Sarlin.

Sarlin was chosen based on safety, cost efficiency and ease, to name a few things. Because Stora Enso uses many different brands of pneumatic devices, Sarlin’s expertise in multiple brands further supported the choice. Stora Enso was specifically looking for a partner who could service devices and supply spare parts regardless of the brand.

- We’re able to service all brands of devices used by Stora Enso. Our expertise in different brands is second to none in Finland. We manage the maintenance and repairs of compressed air equipment to maximise device life cycles while keeping the costs in check, says Viholainen.

Maintenance ensures reliability and safety

The first nationwide maintenance contract started in 2017. The contract was renewed in 2021 to match Stora Enso’s new objectives while meeting the development needs that arose from the first contract period. Stora Enso sought to continue the cooperation due to the competitive price, but also the excellent service experience.

The previous contract period had already yielded a great system built on a combination of Stora Enso’s preventive maintenance technicians and Sarlin’s services.

- We were very happy with the level of service during the first contract, so it was natural for us to continue our collaboration with Sarlin. In 2021, we added some new devices to the contract and made minor amendments to maintenance content, Stora Enso states.

“We live and breathe the exact same things.”

In practice, maintenance is handled by supervisors and technicians hand-picked by Sarlin specifically for Stora Enso. This is done to ensure the availability of local support with a quick response time. Daily work is based on a partnership model built with Stora Enso, which includes continuous development as a core component. One example of the above are the reports Sarlin produces for compressors and dryers. The reports include suggested actions, development proposals and equipment replacement needs. They are reviewed in quarterly cooperation meetings.

- We propose improvements to solve long-term challenges. These challenges are often related to life cycle management, energy efficiency, various technical solutions and increasing or redirecting capacity, for example, says Viholainen.

- We should operate like we’re part of Stora Enso’s own maintenance organisation. We live and breathe the exact same things they do every day, says Viholainen.

Flexible and customer-oriented operations

Although forest industry companies are generally in a good place right now, the future will bring great challenges regarding safety and cost efficiency. Stora Enso is a highly innovative operator in its industry – new solutions are developed actively, and Stora Enso is seeking to include its subcontractors in the innovation process.

- Our collaboration with Sarlin has been excellent in all respects. The preventive maintenance included in the contract has been executed safely and on schedule. During breakdowns, they’ve responded quickly and delivered spare parts in reasonable time, Stora Enso comments.

- Flexibility and customer orientation are at the heart of our operation. Active communication and joint development are the cornerstones for our partnership, they yield the best outcomes. Together, we aim to improve efficiency and create opportunities for Finnish industry to work, profit and thrive, Says Viholainen.
